Jewish Americans have been excluded from the proposed California Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum.

We seek meaningful inclusion in this model for a statewide mandated course. We need to let the Instructional Quality Commission (IQC) members and elected officials hear from us. This model curriculum will be used in thousands of classrooms across the state and in every high school statewide when Ethnic Studies becomes a mandated course in California.

Background: The night before the IQC was set to discuss a set of positive recommended revisions to the Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum draft from the California Department of Education (CDE), the CDE sent a highly unusual last-minute message as the result of a concerted pressure campaign, which reversed course from the proposed plan to focus on the four traditional groups of Ethnic Studies.

Announced less than 24 hours before the meeting, CDE changed the focus away from the four groups to an imperfectly expanded definition of Ethnic Studies. Making this sudden shift, in a non-transparent manner, undermined the Jewish community’s confidence in its good will. There is no reason to oppose the inclusion of any ethnic group in the curriculum. However, the targeted exclusion of some groups is unacceptable.

Jewish Americans are one of the most targeted communities for hate in the United States. One need only look at the violent attack on the synagogue in Poway, California, to see clearly how virulent the discrimination against Jews, as an ethnic group, remains to this day. Excluding Jews erases the experiences of Jewish Americans in California and ignores the critical role that antisemitism plays in white supremacy.
